We are partnering with a globally recognised British audio engineering brand to appoint a Software Engineer (DSP) into their R&D function.
This is not a generic embedded role. This is firmware development at the heart of premium streaming audio systems — where your code directly shapes sound quality.
The role
You’ll develop the embedded firmware that runs on SHARC DSP processors, forming the core of next-generation audio products.
Working closely with acoustics, electronics and firmware engineers, you’ll be involved from early concept through to product release:
Developing real-time embedded software for new products
Designing DSP algorithms in MATLAB and implementing them in C
Building and optimising audio signal processing pipelines
Writing low-level drivers for on-chip and PCB peripherals
Bringing up DSP and digital audio circuitry on early prototype boards
Contributing to architecture decisions and processor interface design
Participating in peer code reviews and technical documentation
You will be hands-on with oscilloscopes, logic analysers and audio test equipment — this is proper engineering, close to the hardware.
What they’re looking for
6+ years commercial C/C++ experience
Strong real-time embedded systems background
Understanding of DSP concepts (filter design, FFT, sample rate conversion, dynamic range control)
Experience working on complex electronics products
Comfortable debugging early-stage prototypes
Familiar with Git, Jira and Agile environments
Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or similar
Experience with Analog Devices SHARC or audio DSP is advantageous. A genuine interest in audio is essential.
Why this role?
You’ll be joining a business built around engineering integrity and a deep passion for music. The R&D team works at the centre of product innovation, collaborating internationally and maintaining exceptionally high technical standards.
If you’re an embedded engineer who wants your work to influence something people genuinely care about — how their music sounds — this is a rare opportunity.
Confidential conversations welcome.

We have a catalogue of audio that inspires creative play and learning with 1,000+ titles in our card store from top creators, publishers and labels - think Disney, Marvel, Roald Dahl and Universal Music. We also create Yoto Originals like BrainBots.
Voted the 14th fastest-growing private software technology company in Britain in The Sunday Times 100 Tech 2025; and named the 94th fastest-growing company in Europe in the prestigious FT1000.
Ranked 9th in Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies in 2024; and featured in the Sifted 100 fastest-growing startups across the UK&I by revenue growth.
Featured in Bloomberg’s 25 UK startups to watch in 2023; and ranked second fastest growing tech company in the UK in the Deloitte Fast50.
Named one of TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Inventions of 2020.
We’re over 200 employees spread across the world.. and growing!
We’re on a mission to be the soundtrack of childhood, and help families on their own unique adventures. By creating products that inspire independent play, we help families discover and grow with an inspiring world of audio - and we would like you to help us achieve it!
*Yoto’s Technology Team*Our Software Engineering team builds the products and platforms that connect families to Yoto - from the Core app kids use every day to the web experiences that bring new subscribers through the door. We're a team that values ownership, craft, and clear thinking. We work closely with Product and Design to ship things that genuinely matter to families, and we're not shy about proposing a better way when we see one. This role sits within the Family Experience team, with a particular focus on our Yoto Club product - a fast-moving, high-impact area where engineering and product thinking go hand in hand.
*What you’ll be doing:*
Own the full stack development of the Yoto Club product - from performant, accessible front-end experiences to robust back-end integrations, including payment infrastructure with Stripe
Work closely with Product, Design, and the Core app team to ship features that drive stability, conversion, and subscriber growth
Propose and document technical improvements to the stack using ADRs and RFCs, communicating change clearly to a broad engineering and non-engineering audience
Run experiments fast - design, build, and iterate with a bias toward learning and shipping
Bring a product mindset to every piece of work: thinking in user outcomes, conversion funnels, and web performance - not just code quality
Help shape how the team works in a startup environment - proactively spotting gaps, suggesting solutions, and going beyond the brief when it matters.
*What you’ll bring:*
Strong full stack web engineering skills, with proven experience owning features across front-end and back-end in a production environment
A track record of communicating technical decisions clearly - you've written ADRs, RFCs, or equivalent, and you can explain complex trade-offs to Product and Design without losing the room
A product-oriented mindset: you think about performance, stability, and conversion, not just feature completion
Comfort in a startup or scale-up environment - self-sufficient, adaptable, and energised by a broad remit
Experience running experiments and iterating quickly, with good judgement about when to go fast and when to slow down
A genuine curiosity about AI-assisted development - you actively use tools like Copilot, Cursor, or Claude to move faster and think better, and you have a clear sense of where they help and where human judgement matters more.
Salary: £60,000 - £70,000 based on experience
*How we use AI at Yoto*We think using AI to work smarter is part of the job.
At Yoto, we use AI to help us move faster and reduce manual work so we can focus our time on creativity, problem-solving and impact. We don’t want to use AI to cut corners - it’s about smart usage that makes space for the work that really matters. Our intention is to be thoughtful about how we use AI. We treat its outputs as a starting point, not the final answer, and we take care to use it responsibly - especially given the trust families place in Yoto.
We don’t expect everyone to be an AI expert, but we do expect people to be curious, to experiment, and to keep improving how they work. If you prefer to do everything manually, you might find our pace and expectations challenging.
The magic at Yoto comes from people working here, not their prompts. AI should help us move faster, not change what makes working here great.
*What you can expect from Yoto:*
Flexibility: Hybrid working - At least 1 day a week on average in our central London office. You are welcome and encouraged to come in more than this. How you meet the minimum expectation is up to you, to ensure you're happy and productive in your role whilst also getting that vital face time with your colleagues. Take advantage of our ‘work from anywhere’ policy to work from a different location for up to 6 weeks every year. Summer Hours policy to use between the months of June and August.
Financial: Receive Income Protection, covering long term sickness for up to 2 years and company sick pay that increases with length of service. Life Assurance cover from day one of your service. About SonicCritic
Streaming pays artists fractions of a penny. SonicCritic doesn’t. We’re a direct-to-fan music platform where independent artists keep 88% of net subscription revenue - real economics, not a rounding error. The MVP is live (web + iOS), we’re incorporated as a Delaware C-corp, and we’re raising a pre-seed round now. You’d be the first engineering hire, working directly with the founder.
The founder built the current product solo. He’s an independent artist who lived the problem - uncredited work, opaque splits, streaming payouts that don’t cover rent - and turned it into a platform. You’d be joining to help him scale it.
What you’ll do
• Own the codebase alongside the founder: architecture decisions, code quality, shipping velocity
• Build and harden core product surfaces - artist upload and payout flows, audio streaming and playback, subscription billing, discovery
• Take the iOS app (Capacitor) and web app from MVP to production-grade
• Design for scale on a lean infrastructure footprint (zero-egress storage architecture keeps our bandwidth costs at zero - help us keep it that way)
• Set the engineering culture: testing, CI/CD, on-call, documentation - you write the playbook
• Talk to artists and fans. Small team, no PM layer. You’ll see the impact of what you ship directly.
Our stack
React 18, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind + shadcn/ui, TanStack Query on the front end. Supabase (Postgres, Auth, Edge Functions, Realtime, Storage) on the back end. Capacitor for iOS. Stripe for payments. Cloudflare R2 for audio storage. Spotify and Shazam API integrations.
You don’t need to know all of it. You need to be able to pick any of it up fast.
What we’re looking for
• 3+ years shipping production software, with real full-stack range
• Experience at an early-stage startup - ideally you’ve been employee #1–5 somewhere and know what that actually means
• Comfort owning ambiguous problems end to end without a spec
• Strong TypeScript/React; solid instincts with Postgres and serverless backends
• Bonus: production experience with audio streaming, media pipelines, or real-time systems
• Bonus: you’re a musician, or you care enough about music to be angry about how artists get paid
What you get
• Founding equity that reflects founding risk - standard 4-year vest, 1-year cliff
• Direct partnership with the founder/CEO; your fingerprints on every technical decision
• A live product with real users, not a slide deck
• A mission with teeth: every subscriber we add puts $10.84/month directly into artists’ pockets
How to apply
Email a short note about the most interesting thing you’ve shipped - plus a link to code, a product, or anything you’ve built. If you’ve ever released music, mention that too. andrew@soniccritic.ai

Our first product, Songscription, is the AI-powered "Shazam for sheet music" which allows people to upload any audio and get back sheet music, MIDI, tabs, or piano roll back in minutes. Hundreds of thousands of musicians have used it to transcribe songs that have never been written down before. Our second product, Anything Piano, is an app that lets users upload any song and learn it through an interactive piano roll with real-time feedback.
We've raised a $5M seed led by Reach Capital and been covered in TechCrunch, Billboard, and MusicRadar. The team is small, the pace is fast, and we're just getting started.
Role Description
Songscription is hiring a Founding Mobile App Developer to help shape the next generation of tools for music learning. You'll lead the development of our mobile experience from the ground up, starting with bringing our music transcription product to mobile, then transition into building a new AI-native learning app that leverages our proprietary models to enable users to learn any song, without the limitations of a static catalog.

Key Responsibilities
Lead mobile app development from zero to one, owning the entire codebase for iOS and Android
Architect and implement core infrastructure spanning database architecture, authentication, and payments
Ship fast and iterate relentlessly, translating product specs and design mocks into production code at exceptional speed, prototyping new features and refining them based on user feedback and usage data
As the team grows, guide junior developers and help establish Songscription's engineering culture and best practices
About You
3+ years of full-time mobile development experience, including shipping and maintaining consumer mobile apps with significant user bases
Strong command of the full mobile stack: modern mobile frameworks (e.g., React Native, Swift, Kotlin, or similar), Next.js, Tailwind, backend-as-a-service platforms (Supabase strongly preferred), authentication, payments, database design, and API integration
Deep technical knowledge and problem-solving ability. You're the kind of engineer who can teach the team new approaches, anticipate issues before they arise, and make smart tradeoffs between speed and architecture
Strong product intuition and collaboration skills. You work fluidly with product and design teams, push back constructively when needed, and have an eye for what makes mobile experiences delightful
Able to work in-person at our San Francisco Bay Area office
Experience playing an instrument and/or strong passion for music
(Bonus) Familiarity with music transcription and music data formats (e.g., MIDI, MusicXML, etc.)
(Bonus) Experience in game development or working on learning software, particularly in music
Benefits
Medical, Vision, Dental, and Life Insurance

Downtown Music Publishing is looking for a driven individual to join us as a Full Stack Software Engineer to help build our next-generation music publishing platform from the ground up. You'll help in shaping the architecture, tooling, and engineering culture of a catalog management platform that powers musical work registration, rights tracking, and royalty collection for publishers worldwide. Currently seeking candidates local to the Nashville Area.
What You'll Do
Build a new platform from first principles — data model, API design, and infrastructure — rather than maintaining legacy systems, while making pragmatic decisions that hold up at production scale.
Design and implement a schema-first GraphQL API (Apollo Server) over PostgreSQL, including multi-tenant data isolation (row-level security), type-safe query layers, and performance patterns like DataLoader batching.
Develop React/TypeScript (Next.js) interfaces used by both internal teams and clients to manage catalogs, registrations, and data-quality workflows.
Build AI-native features as a core part of the product: AI-assisted data ingestion and matching, agent-accessible APIs via Model Context Protocol (MCP), and LLM-powered workflows using the Vercel AI SDK and Amazon Bedrock.
Work in an AI-augmented, spec-driven development workflow — architecture specs, agent-assisted implementation, and rigorous automated review are how the team ships, not an experiment on the side.
Own components end-to-end: design, implementation, integration testing against real databases, deployment (AWS CDK), and operational responsibility.
Model and implement music publishing domain logic — works, writers, shares, agreements, and society registration formats (e.g., CWR) — with the precision that financial and rights data demands.
You are / have
Bachelor's degree in computer science, software development, or equivalent experience.
5+ years of experience developing web-based software solutions.
Experience architecting new systems or services from scratch — you're comfortable with ambiguity, and you document the "why" behind decisions, not just the "what."
Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js across the full stack.
Solid relational database fundamentals: schema design, migrations, transactions, and query performance in PostgreSQL (or similar).
Experience with both traditional software development lifecycle and agentic software development — including spec-driven development, AI-augmented engineering, and working effectively with coding agents.
Interest in the music industry — prior experience with rights management, royalties, or metadata standards (CWR, DDEX, ISWC/ISRC) is a plus, not a requirement.
Ideally, significant experience with some of the following technologies or similar tools:Backend: Node.js, GraphQL (Apollo Server, schema-first), PostgreSQL, etc.
Frontend: React, Next.js, TypeScript, modern state management (e.g., Zustand)
AI/Agents: Vercel AI SDK, SpecKit, CodeX, Amazon Bedrock, Model Context Protocol (MCP), LLM tool design.
Infrastructure: AWS (including CDK), Docker, Terraform, GitHub Actions
Testing: Vitest, Testcontainers (integration testing against real databases), Playwright
Observability: Datadog, Sentry, structured logging
Why you want to work here
Work at the frontier of AI-assisted engineering — agentic workflows are central to how this team builds software.
Ample opportunities to work with leaders and employees across our business.
Work in a collaborative environment full of mission-driven, innovative, and passionate people.
Be a part of an open, welcoming, and inclusive culture.
Rich benefit program (Medical, Dental, Vision), Life Insurance, 401k (with match).
Free CitiBike Membership (NYC Only).
Paid Volunteer Hours.
Ensuring a diverse and inclusive workplace where we learn from each other is core to Downtown's values. We welcome and encourage all applicants of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives to apply.
Downtown provides base salary ranges for all positions located in the United States at the time of posting. The hiring range for this position up to $150,000 annually. This range does not include any other variable compensation components.
